Hi Eric
I have a 3 yo Golden retriever, male. He was attacked by 2 pittbulls as my husband was walking him on the sidewalk. He was 5 mo.
He slowly developed aggressive behaviour when seeing another dog, but not to all dogs.
Mostly to male, unneutered dogs.He is also not neutered.I tried the chemical neutering but it did not change his behaviour.
I tried but not consistently I have to say the 'click and treat 'method. Also the 'choke collar' but I gave it up because I hated choking him.I walk him only with the gentle leader so I can control him better when he lunges at other dogs.
Some dogs are really scared when they see him from a distance and refuse to take another step.
He at the same time, does not growl if another dog approaches him confidently. He looks kind of baffled and shy at these moments.Otherwise he is a very gentle dog, very clever and very beautiful of course.
I suppose he has fear aggression.Sometimes, at crossroads he looks around him like he is worried something will attack or come unexpectedly. What else can I try with him?Should I get him a partner?Last time when he lunged at a dog I snapped him over his nose with the plastic handle of the leash. He stopped growling but other than that the effect was not long lasting. What else can I do?

Love your blog! Wish I'd known not to use prong collars. My dog is 2 1/2 years old. We got her from the shelter when she was 6 months old and, because she had kennel cough, we couldn't socialize her for another 2 months or so. We took her to a trainer who said we should use a prong collar. She is agressive with other dogs at times. We are leary about bringing her around other dogs because she always seems so anxious and we never know whether she'll start a fight or not. Is it too late to correct this behavior?

Hey Eric,

So how to you properly correct them without cross-association? If I correct before they see the dog, then they don't know why I'm doing it.

I understand what you mean about cross association but what can I do when my dog lunges at other dogs when he's on the lead? Thanks.
