Exercise For Dogs

Exercise for dogs is an important topic to discuss. One of the main reasons we have behavior problems with dogs is there lack of exercise. Pent up energy in dogs can create havoc in most households. It’s important to understand that there are two types of exercise for dogs: Mental exercise and physical exercise.

It’s good to give your dog mental activities to do when you are away for long periods of time. In the videos you’ll see my two favorite types of mental exercises for dogs.

  1. Kat says:

I hate to say that neither of those would work for my dog – LOL! He has almost no interest in toys whatever!

  2. Sherry says:

Even a dog who is not interested in toys will most likely love a Kong toy because they are after the treat, not the toy. Try it!

  3. Vicki says:

My dog loves both of these toys. Every time I have to leave the house. I stuff the kong toy with peanut butter. Sometimes she still licks at it even after I get home. I fill the buster cube with a few peices of soft treats and fill it the rest of the way with her dog food. She has only had the buster cube for a few months and I think it is on the hardest level that you can set it.

  4. Larry says:

I’ve also used the near empty peanutbutter container (plastic not glass). Just make sure there is no sharp edges inside hole opening to harm/scrape dog’s tongue.

  5. MartyE says:

Our husky needs long lasting activities.

We warm the peanut butter in the microwave so it’s easy to pour into the Kong. We fill it to the top & freeze it overnight.

It provides her with a few hours of activity. Now we can go to a movie and not find our house destroyed.

  6. Jo says:

My cairn terrier, Cubbie who is 14 months takes the easy route and simply chews the end of the Kong toy off to get to the stuffed in food.

  7. kaz says:

I too have a dog who shows zero interest in toys…I tried both of these treat toys with her favourite foods…She took a quick sniff then walked away from both of them.
By the way I tied it between meals & again when she had missed a meal …She just does not take to them….

I think she simply does not like either plastic or rubber.

  8. Joan says:

I have found an alternative to the plastic or rubber toys. A local meat shop sells shank bones cut into 3″ or 4″ pieces and frozen, then sold for a few dollars a bag. A bag may contain 3 to five bones for between $2 and $4. If I have to be away for a longer than usual period of time or the dogs have to be left inside all day because of inclement weather, out comes a bone. They love it. And–if you refrigerate the bone once they have all the marrow out, you can restuff it with soft dog food or cheese or peanut butter, etc., and refreeze it once or twice more. Maybe that would work for your dog who dislikes the toys.

  9. Bill says:

I am looking for a puppy, one that is laid back and easy to train. I was wondering if there was a breed of dog that you would recommend. I had a Miniature Schnauzer which was a very smart dog. Very easy to train. I had him for 16 years and had to have him put to sleep. Well the time has come for me to find a new pet. So if you could recommend one I would appreciate it.
    Thank You
    Bill

  10. Johnny Boots says:

Def. freeze the peanut butter, it’ll last WAY longer. Throwing a couple of small treats in there with the PB is great too.

  11. Dixie Doodle says:

My dog loves the kong or any toy that is stuffed with treats. She will flip it in the air and when it hits the ground the treats will fall out, she also will flip it into the wall for the same result, and when she can’t get the last cookit out she will drop that slobbery kong into my lap so I can help her. She is brilliant.

  12. Cosmo & Cappy's dad says:

We also use canned dog food and freeze it. At least that way they get some nutritional value beyond the peanut butter.

  13. Kelly says:

Didn’t find the link to order the kong toy on this page that you referred to in the first video.

  14. Steve says:

Bill, Any reason your not getting another mini Schnauzer? We had to put down our lab a few years back. We researched a bunch of dogs and realized that a lab is what we liked. We just got our puppy.. :-)
