Back in 1998 I attended the Association of Pet Dog Trainers annual convention and trade show in Memphis, TN. I had the great opprotunity to talk to the trainer for the movie 101 Dalmatains (the real movie not the cartoon).
What I learned from him can be of great use to you. You see, I asked him what the most important command a dog in the movies has to learn. He said that learning the place command is hands down the most important command for a dog.
He then showed me how they did it. Would you like to know?
Good…
They start by give the dog a place to go to like a small mat. The trainer would put a few treat on the mat and give the command "place". The dog would run over and get the treat. This was repeated over and over until the dog starts to get it.
The mat would be replaced with smaller objects until they had worked down to a strip of tape on the floor. The trainer informed me that the tape was the visual cue for the dog to go to his place. Were ever they put the tape the dog would go to.
This is a great command to teach your dog. Spend some time teaching your dog place. It will come in real handy in the future.
