The Rocky Balboa Dog Story

By Eric Letendre

There are a lot of people that I really admire, past and present. Ben Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, Mohammed Ali, Napoleon Hill, Dr. Ian Dunbar and Sylvester Stallone are just a few. I went to see Sly’s new movie, The Expendables, yesterday and noticed that he wrote and directed the movie.

I like to do research and study people that I admire, and I came across this video about Sylvester Stallone’s dog, told by Tony Robbins. I liked Sylvester Stallone before I saw this video. After watching the video, it COMPLETELY changed the way I thought of him. There is a lot to learn by listening to this. Please leave a comment and let me know your thoughts.

I cried, what can I say?
Although from Stallone who is Italian I would have expected something like that.he is after all a sentimental guy.Or was.Or whatever…I liked Rocky the first movie. And that movie he played with Dolly Parton in.
You know there is a joke that sounds like this.’Put a woman and a dog in your car’s trunk and close it!Return after one hour and open it!See who is happy to see you!So I guess that was the experience Sylvester went through. And yeah I’m a woman…And I would act like a woman. That does not mean I don’t love my dog, the most….

  2. Roxana says:

However, after I investigated a few sites about the story, it seems a lot of it has been made up.Anyway, even if he did not pay 15K for the dog, the thought that he did smth to get the dog back(I hope that at least is true)is worth shedding a tear for.

  3. Jack Rickard says:

What are you talking about? I LOVED this story. I just LOVED it.

    Jack Rickard

  4. Al says:

Cute story, but I still consider Stallone a moron.

  5. I also loved the story Jack. I think Stallone is a pretty amazing individual. Part of his face paralyzed at birth, bounced from foster home to foster home, voted “Most likely to get the electric chair” by his school, went to on to become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, creating two iconic characters: Rocky and Rambo. I think he has overcome huge odds and has been an enduring figure for almost 40 years.

  6. Nurse Nice says:

How on earth could anyone sell their“best friend” dog to a stranger????? I hope that part is NOT true!

  7. Katherine McIntyre says:

Wow I’ve always liked Stallone but to hear how much he’s over come and how even when he was struggling to still not want to part with his best friend. Then in the midst of adrenaline from all the success and obviously distraction of the movie business for the first time…To still go and get his dog back and not give up till he got him (whatever the real amount or way he went about it) Just shows the real character of the guy!

  8. Ashley says:

I loved this story. It amazed me to hear of someone at rock bottom clawing their way upwards, sacrificing their dog (best friend) to survive, then turning the tables and getting him back, and at the same time achieving his lifes’ dream. The strength of the human spirit is a great thing. Respect to Sylvester………
Thanks for sharing this tale, it is beautiful.

  9. Chad Daffern says:

Great Story! Sly is a great actor and he is making a comeback.

  10. LiamTeasdale says:

great story. it is true that 100% determintion and drive will get you your dreams. thanks eric

  11. Judy Hendrickson says:

Liked the story..sort of saw the end coming though. I hope it is true. I would NEVER even think of selling my dogs, under any circumstances. They are what keep me going thru hard times and emotional pitfalls as well as sharing my joys and contributing to those “peaks” in life that always show themselves along with the valleys. It would be like selling your children for me. I realize that many people do not share my views. That’s OK tho..everyone is different and treat their dogs differently as well. Thanks for the great story!

  12. Gascondi says:

He sold his dog because he COULDN’T FEED HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. John says:

    I’m with you Al.

Chad, how many moons does your planet have?

  14. Cherk Eip says:

Yea, but he sold him to a complete stranger!!!!! No way would I ever do that. He had no way of knowing how this guy would treat his best friend. But, okay, I do like very much that he went looking to buy him back, and succeeded. And I do admire his sheer determination and perseverance to make his dream come true.

  15. Debbie says:

I completly understand what he went through, You do what you have to sometimes. He knew he had to make a sacrifice to take care of the dog. And his wife and himself. To each there own I guess. You don’t know what you would do until you are in that situation. Ok anyway thank you for the great story!

  16. Simon says:

As much as I love the man/dog relationship, anyone who can’t even afford to feed their dog should consider rehoming them!

I love my dogs and I work hard to make sure they have everything they need before sorting out the things I want. If I could no longer afford to look after them on an ongoing basis, I would have to rehome them.

Now the ‘complete stranger’ bit isn’t the best way to do it, but it’s better than starving the dog for his own pig headedness. The dog isn’t in a stable family, isn’t being fed (or being fed little)

It’s a touching story and I feel that if it changed your opinion of sly from that of admiration to something else, then you’re looking at it the wrong way. If your business headed down the pan and you ended up nearly on the streets, would you really drag your best friends down with you?

Also remember this is not Sly’s account of the story, this is a guy who became successful by selling success stories, Tony’s priority is not about animal care, it’s about creating a touching story to sell his products. Even Sly’s version of the story was probably embelleshed.

Waffling now, I think you’re jumping to conclusions needing a rethink.

  17. juAN says:

I think it´s unimaginable how far the love for your pet can be…

  18. David Forrest says:

Loving the dog story, would do the same for my dog.
I LOVE MY DOG SO MUCH!!!

  19. If this story is true that dog is pretty lucky to have someone who first, would rather go through the grief of losing a loved one so that it could be taken care of and second, someone who would come back and not give up until he could get him back once he could provide for him. What a great story.
I wonder who the guy was in the movie and what his real name is.

  20. Cricket says:

Awesome and despicable all at the same time! Awesome he got his dog back and paid whatever for it …. but … even broke arsed my dog would get fed before i did anything else AND i would NEVER and i mean NEVER sell my dog. I would pimp myself before i’d do that even. I see that as no different to selling off your kids. Can’t imagine anyone being too happy about the story if it was his toddler instead of his dog ey….

  21. Christine says:

Totally agree with Simon (Aug. 15th response) Amen!

  22. Donna Williams says:

Great story – thanks for the inspiration. Only a dog lover would understand! Some people don’t seem to understand that his motivation for selling the dog may have been because he couldn’t properly care for him. On the show ‘Animal Cops’, I often see people who have abused their animals because they can’t afford to feed them, and then they go to court and try to play on the judge’s sympathies, to get their pets back = back into poverty. It was a wise Sly who understand that he needed to let go of his beloved pet.

  23. Mark Kelleher says:

It is a nice story but I could NEVER part with my dog…I would do whatever it took to feed her and myself.
